Shoro Roy is a sound artist and lifelong musician who lets rats, air quality, news cycles, and subway tunnels do the composing.

About the Artwork

We chose Halsey Street Station on the L train, a subterranean threshold between two neighbourhoods where crowds pass through daily, rarely listening. Subway stations are inherently liminal: no one is fully present, always suspended between departure and arrival. That dissociation drew us to the site, along with its particular social charge, the anonymity, the closeness of strangers, the quiet unease of being underground without daylight or exit. Following Alvin Lucier's I Am Sitting in a Room, we looped sound back into the tunnel until it became unrecognizable, reshaped entirely by the space.
